Electricity and natural gas prices reach new highs in the EU in the first half of the year

The prices of electricity and natural gas for domestic use in the European Union (EU) reached new highs, in the first half of the year, of 28.9 euros per kilowatt hour (kWh) and 11.9 kWh, fees and taxes included, according to Eurostat.

According to the European Statistical Service, in the first half of 2023, average national electricity prices in the EU continued to increase compared to the same period in 2022, rising from €25.3 per 100 kWh to €28.9 per 100 kWh.

Average natural gas prices also increased year-on-year, going from 8.6 euros per 100 kWh to 11.9 euros per 100 kWh in the first half of 2023.

These prices are the highest recorded by Eurostat.

However, the bulletin also highlights that, compared to the first six months of the year, the proportion of fees and taxes in electricity bills fell, on EU average, from 23% to 19% for electricity and from 27% % to 19% for electricity gas.

In Portugal, domestic consumers paid 20.7 euros per 100 kWh of electricity, with rates and taxes reduced by 6% year-on-year, placing the country in 19th place in the EU ranking, led by the Netherlands (47.5 euros/100 kWh) and Bulgaria presents the lowest prices (11.3 euros/100kWh).

As for natural gas, Portuguese domestic consumers pay 14 euros per 100 kWh, ranking seventh in a table in which the Dutch pay the highest prices (24.8 euros/100kWh) and the Hungarians the lowest (3 .37 euros).
