“It is important that we recognize the pain and suffering of the Israeli people and of the families who have lost relatives or whose relatives are hostages if we want to talk to Israel and influence Israel, and that is why it is very important that we listen first if we want to be heard.”
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, understands that any reflection on the current situation must take into account the events of October 7, when “it all began with a horrendous attack, by Hamas terrorists, against the people of Israel.” .
“It was important and very positive that so many leaders went to Israel to listen to Israel, but also to speak very clearly about the need to exercise the right to self-defense and to do so in accordance with international law,” recalled Ursula von der Leyen, considering that it is a position free of contradictions.
“The leaders stressed that the siege [à Faixa de Gaza] must end and that it is of utmost importance that the Palestinian people, the hostages and all those in Gaza have access to humanitarian aid,” stressed the head of the community executive, considering that “there is no contradiction between showing solidarity with Israel and, Obviously, act in accordance with the need for humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza.”
