Kazakhstan’s government announced on Saturday that it plans to “give back control” to ArcelorMittal’s local subsidiary, following a new accident at a giant coal mine in the global steel sector.
“Efforts are underway to regain control of the company for the benefit of the Republic of Kazakhstan”the Kazakh government said in a statement on the social network Telegram, quoted by the AFP news agency.
The note specified that the Kazakh government “is not considering a subsequent transfer of ArcelorMittal to other foreign investors.”
Immediately after the announcement of the tragedy, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev ordered in a press release to end cooperation with the group. According to the presidential office, the Kazakh leader went to the scene of the accident.
