Hundreds of buildings were “completely destroyed” in the Gaza Strip after Israeli bombings carried out on Friday night, the Palestinian Civil Defense reported this Saturday.
“Hundreds of buildings and houses were completely destroyed and thousands of other houses were damaged,” Mahmoud Bassal, spokesman for the Civil Defense in Gaza, a Palestinian territory controlled by the Islamist movement Hamas, told Agence France Presse (AFP).
The intense shelling unleashed overnight “changed the landscape of Gaza and the northern provinces,” he added.
According to testimonies collected by AFP, the most violent Israeli bombings were concentrated in the areas near two hospitals, Al Shifa in Gaza City and the so-called “Indonesian” hospital, built with donations from Indonesia, in the Jabaliya sector. . , more to the north.
The attacks destroyed many buildings and left huge craters in the streets, which were completely destroyed.
A few hours before the massive bombings began, on Friday night, the Israeli army accused Hamas of “waging war from the hospitals” of the Gaza Strip and of using its population as a “human shield,” which the Islamist movement categorically denied.
The war broke out on October 7 after Hamas attacks on Israeli soil, unprecedented in scale and violence, which killed more than 1,400 people, most of them civilians, according to Israel.
According to the Israeli army, 229 people are being held hostage after being taken by Hamas forces in the Gaza Strip, where the movement has controlled power since 2007.
The Hamas Health Ministry announced that retaliatory bombings killed more than 7,300 people, the vast majority of them civilians, including more than 3,000 children.
