The number of displaced people in Lebanon amounts to about 29,000

The number of people displaced in Lebanon due to cross-border attacks between the Shiite group Hezbollah and Israeli forces has risen to almost 29,000, three weeks after the border violence began, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported this Saturday.

Since the start of the clashes, on October 8 and until Thursday, the UN agency has recorded a total of 28,965 internal displacements in the Mediterranean country, of which at least 7,847 occurred during the last four days of that period. .

Most of the departures were recorded in the border areas with Israel and other southern provinces, some of which were considerable distances from the center of the violence, according to an infographic map published by the IOM.

To date, displacements have been confirmed in 117 different areas of Lebanon and eight emergency shelters have been opened to accommodate affected people, three of which are in the city of Tire and five in the city of Hasbaya, both in the South of the country.

For almost three weeks, Hezbollah and Israeli forces have been involved in cross-border attacks on the border between both countries, where there have also been actions claimed by Palestinian factions present in Lebanese territory.

The violence has intensified over the days, with almost constant exchanges of fire, with Hezbollah launching missiles, rockets or mortars and Israeli airstrikes.

The escalation has raised fears that Lebanon could become a second front in the Gaza war. Meanwhile, the Beirut government maintains contacts at the national and international level to try to contain the situation.
