Guterres alarmed by the “increasingly desperate” situation in Gaza

The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres expressed concern this Sunday over the “increasingly desperate” situation in the Gaza Strip, lamenting that Israel has “intensified its military operations in the region.”

“The situation in Gaza is becoming more desperate by the hour. I regret that, instead of a much-needed humanitarian pause supported by the international community, Israel has intensified its military operations.”Guterres said during a visit to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal.

Guterres described the number of civilians killed and injured in the war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas as “totally unacceptable.”

The UN Secretary-General reiterated his call for an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip and called for “the delivery of sustainable humanitarian assistance on a scale that meets the needs of the people” of the Gaza Strip Palestinian territory.

‘The world is witnessing a humanitarian catastrophe unfolding before our eyes’said Antonio Guterres.

“More than two million people, with nowhere safe to go, are deprived of the basic necessities of life – food, water, shelter and medical care – as they are subjected to relentless bombardment”the United Nations Secretary-General added.

The Islamist group Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel on October 7 with the launch of thousands of rockets and the incursion of armed militiamen, killing more than 1,400 Israelis, mostly civilians, and kidnapping more than 200.

In response, Israel declared war on Hamas, a movement that has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007 and has been classified as terrorist by the European Union and the United States. Israel bombed several of the group’s infrastructures in the Gaza Strip and imposed a total siege. the area with an interruption of the supply of water, fuel and electricity.

The conflict has already caused thousands of deaths and injuries in both areas, among military personnel and civilians.

Ten Nepalis have already been killed in the war between Israel and Hamas and an eleventh has been reported missing.
