Images of some of the 229 Israeli hostages kidnapped by the Islamic extremist movement Hamas will be displayed in Porto and Lisbon this Monday as a way to raise awareness among Portuguese about the situation in Gaza.
“This is a local initiative of Israelis and Jews in Portugal, mainly in Lisbon, because we are concerned citizens,” said one of the initiators, Eyal Goldman, who lives in Porto.
“We are independent people, not related to the Israeli government, nor to the Jewish community. We do this spontaneously, based on our faith and our concern” about the humanitarian situation of the hostages, Eyal Goldman told Lusa.
The promoter of the initiative said that the aim is “to appeal to humanity and the Portuguese people to support this international call from Portugal”recalling that “more than 230 people were kidnapped, including 18 elderly, over 75 years old and 33 minor hostages”.
“Many saw their parents and relatives murdered before their eyes and were abducted to Gaza by the terrorist organization Hamas without any help or family,” he said.
“Without any political issue, we call on people to condemn this situation and demand his immediate release,” he added.
Images of the hostages were displayed in Lisbon, in Parque Eduardo VII, and in Porto, on Avenida dos Aliados.
At least 239 hostages abducted by Hamas commandos during the attack on Israeli territory on October 7 are being held in the Gaza Strip, according to the latest assessment by Israeli authorities.
This attack, on an unprecedented scale, sparked a war that left thousands dead on both sides.
