More than seven months after the start of the war, the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, has asked his G7 counterparts to help create an air shield capable of stopping the Russian attacks that descend on his country and have multiplied for two days.
So far, Kyiv has received significant international aid, but when it comes to anti-aircraft missiles, these are mainly light, with a relatively short range. Therefore, to protect itself, Ukraine needs a more sophisticated system.
According to Gen. Jerome Pellistrandi, Kyiv could benefit from deliveries of “more complex systems, which are usually on vehicles, these are called missile batteries.”
These systems “have an acquisition radar, to see, identify enemy threats”, specifies the BFMTV microphone.
An iron dome?
The objective is to give automatic firing orders to a post that includes several missiles, with a range of up to 20 kilometers. “The only thing is that they are complex, expensive systems that of course require a lot of training, training and very broad coordination,” warns General Pellistrandi.
The installation of an air shield over Ukraine could make one think of the “iron dome” that protects Israel. But unlike the Jewish state, Kyiv will only be able to protect certain strategic places, because the area of Ukraine is much larger.
On Monday, the White House announced in a press release the shipment of “advanced” air defense systems. They will be NASAMS batteries (Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System), a medium and long-range system capable of intercepting missiles at a distance of 180 km.
It should be noted that while many missiles have been sent to Ukrainian territory since the beginning of the week, some are intercepted en route. Thus, this Tuesday, Volodymyr Zelensky announced that 20 of the 28 missiles that were aimed at his country were destroyed.
