A hiker dies of cold after violent snowfall in China, hundreds of other evacuees

A hiker died of hypothermia and at the evil altitude in the mountains of the province of Qinghai, the Chinese media announced on Monday, October 6. More than 350 people have also been evacuated by local rescuers.

A hiker died of cold and hundreds of others were rescued after strong snowfall in the Tibetan set and at the foot of Mont Everest on the Chinese side, hikers and state media reported this Monday, October 6.

Evacuated on Monday, a young hiker nicknamed Feifei tells AFP that he made a walk of several days with three friends and a local guide in the Karma Valley at the foot of the Chinese side of Mont Everest, in Tibet (west). But the strong snowfall surprised the group on Saturday, October 4 to Sunday, October 5, buried the camp located almost 5,000 meters above sea level.

“You had to constantly clean the snow in the stores, but I fell as fatigue (…) and my store was buried,” said Jiangsu’s girl, an east province.

Finally he found refuge in another store. After two days of walking during which “the Firefighters opened the road using Yaks and horses to clear the snow,” the group finally returned to the rescue center installed from the road.

More than 350 evacuated hikers

In the same Valley, another 350 hikers were rescued Sunday night, the state chain of CCTV reported. But more than 200 others were still at that time in altitude camps, such as Feifei. The young walker says that she has seen dozens of hikers on the trip, some of whom weakened by hunger or altitude, but none in critical condition.

Local authorities did not respond to AFP requests regarding the number of remaining people to be rescued in the area.

Further north, in the mountains of the province of Qinghai (northwest of China), a hiker died of hypothermia and altitude evil, the state chain CCTV announced Monday, citing security services. In this sector located more than 4,000 meters above sea level and also subject to difficult weather conditions, another 137 walkers were also evacuated, according to the same source.

His “stable vital signs,” said CCTV.
