Israel uses artificial intelligence to identify targets in Gaza

The Israeli military is using artificial intelligence and automated tools to identify targets of the Islamist group Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Thursday.

The so-called “target center” of the IDF’s Military Intelligence Service has identified about 1,200 new Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip as part of the ground offensive that began last week.

“For the first time, ground forces are operating in the Gaza Strip and receiving intelligence and targeting with updated operational plans,” the IDF said.

The plans are sent in real time to the IDF’s southern command to “carry out hundreds of attacks simultaneously,” the Israeli army said in a statement quoted by Spanish agency Europa Press.

“This is a plan to make intelligence information fully accessible (…) and immediately close these fire rings using artificial intelligence systems,” said an army officer.

The same source said that during a war “the enemy behaves differently and creates new opportunities”, and that operational needs are defined “in all combat contexts by the relevant commander”.

The official said the standards “are the highest.”

“We are generating targets for precise attacks on Hamas-associated infrastructure, inflicting maximum damage on the enemy and minimizing damage to those not involved,” he said.

He also said the IDF works without compromise “when it comes to defining who and what is an enemy.”

“Members of the terrorist organization Hamas are not immune, no matter where they hide,” he added.

Since the start of the war, following Hamas’ unprecedented attack on Israeli territory on October 7, the IDF claims to have hit more than 12,000 targets in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas, which has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007, said Israeli attacks have caused more than 9,000 deaths, according to a new report released today.

Israel accused Hamas of killing more than 1,400 people in the October 7 attack on Israeli territory.

The Islamist group’s commandos have also kidnapped hundreds of Israelis and foreigners and are holding them hostage in the Gaza Strip.

IDF spokesman Admiral Daniel Hagari said today that Hamas had taken 242 hostages.

Israel, the United States and the European Union classify Hamas as a terrorist organization.
