Israel: Rishi Sunak and Guterres call for an urgent increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and United Nations Secretary General António Guterres agreed on the urgent need for more humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip during a meeting near London on Thursday.

At a meeting on the sidelines of the International Summit on Artificial Intelligence Security ending this Thursday in Bletchley Park, north of London, the “two subsequently discussed the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza and agreed on the importance of urgently expanding the delivery of life-saving humanitarian assistance”said a spokesman for Sunak.

The head of the British government said Britain has strengthened funding for aid to the United Nations and other organizations working in Gaza, and for sending emergency supplies and equipment to Egypt.

“The Prime Minister and the Secretary-General agreed on the need to reinvigorate international efforts to achieve a lasting solution to the conflict and make progress towards a two-state solution”the spokesperson added.

The meeting took place on the second and final day of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Summit, where Guterres was one of the few world leaders to attend in person, along with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Italy’s Prime Minister Georgia Meloni.

On October 7, the Islamist group Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel with the launch of thousands of rockets and the raid of armed militiamen, taking more than two hundred hostages.

In response, Israel declared war on Hamas, a movement that has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007, by bombing several of the group’s infrastructure facilities in the Gaza Strip and completely besieging the territory, cutting off water, fuel and electricity supplies.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas, classified as a terrorist organization by the EU and the United States, has already left thousands dead and injured in both areas, including soldiers and civilians.
