Hamas government says 27 killed in attack on UN school

At least 27 people were killed this Thursday in an alleged Israeli attack near a UN school in the Jabaliya refugee camp, in the Gaza Strip, announced the Ministry of Health of the territory controlled by the Palestinian movement Hamas.

“The bodies of 27 martyrs have been recovered and there are also many wounded,” said ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qidreh, quoted by France Presse (AFP), stressing that this information could not immediately be independently verified.

In AFPTV images, numerous bloody bodies can be seen lying on the ground in front of the school, where many people displaced by the war in the Middle East have taken refuge.

“Children under 10 years old were torn to pieces,” a woman shouted in the school yard, while others, crying, hugged each other to console themselves, describes AFP.

There was no immediate comment from the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, which runs the school.

The Jabaliya refugee camp, the largest in the Gaza Strip, was already the target of deadly shelling on Tuesday and Wednesday. According to the Hamas government, 195 people were killed in these attacks, a figure that could not be confirmed.

15 kilometers south of Jabaliya, in the Boureij refugee camp, another Israeli bombardment destroyed around twenty houses and killed at least 15 people, according to the Gaza Civil Defense.

“Fifteen martyrs were pulled from the rubble in just five minutes after the arrival of the Civil Defense team,” the rescue service said in a message to the press.

“The planes bombed the entire building. I myself was rescued from the rubble,” camp resident Hanane Abdelhadi said in an AFPTV video.

Another resident, Mohamad Karajah, was holding his two-year-old son, who was injured in the face. “The house collapsed on us, more than 20 houses were reduced to rubble,” said the 27-year-old man.

According to the Hamas Ministry of Health, 9,061 people, including 3,760 children, have died in the Gaza Strip since the start of the war with Israel, triggered by the bloody Hamas attack on Israeli soil on October 7.

The United States and Israel question the veracity of Hamas’ figures, which they consider inflated for propaganda purposes.

Around 1,400 people, most of them civilians, were killed in this attack, the deadliest since the creation of the State of Israel in 1948. Hamas still holds more than 200 hostages in Gaza.
