The organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Monday asked Israel’s allies and supporters of Palestinian militias to stop sending weapons due to the “real risk that they will be used to commit serious abuses.”
In a statement, the non-governmental human rights organization recalled that both Israelis and Palestinians are responsible for “serious abuses that constitute war crimes.”
The organization referred in particular to the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Germany, which support Israel through military assistance and arms sales, and Iran, which supplies weapons to Palestinian groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
“The United States, Iran and other governments risk becoming complicit in serious abuses if they continue to provide military assistance to known criminals,” said Bruno Stagno, deputy executive director of HRW and former foreign minister of Costa Rica, who warned that Civilians were being punished at a level “unprecedented” in the recent history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
In its statement, the NGO describes as “war crimes” the attacks by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas against Israeli civilians on October 7, which left 1,400 dead and more than 200 hostages.
The attacks led Israel to declare war on the Palestinian group, which controls the Gaza Strip, launching an offensive that has already cost the lives of some 10,000 people (many of them children) – according to Hamas – and surrounded the population of the Gaza Strip.
