This Tuesday, Russia called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to analyze the threat of the use of nuclear weapons against the Gaza Strip made by an Israeli minister suspended by the Prime Minister.
The minister in question, Amihai Eliyahu, from the far right, admitted this weekend the use of “an atomic bomb” as a way to resolve the war between Israel and the Islamist group Hamas.
“He was referring to the resources available in his country or their use [recursos] North Americans? Nobody explained. All these questions require an answer,” said Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for Russian diplomacy.
The words of Israel’s Heritage Minister “take the escalation to a completely different level,” Zakharova said, according to the Russian agency Interfax.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office on Sunday distanced itself from Eliyahu’s statements, announcing his suspension of ministerial meetings “indefinitely” but without firing him.
Following the Israeli minister’s statements, Iran on Monday called on the UN and the IAEA to take “swift and immediate measures” to “disarm Israel’s savage ‘apartheid’ regime.”
For Tehran, Eliyahu’s statements are “a sign that the regime has been defeated by the resistance,” the Spanish agency Europa Press said.
Israel has been one of the main opponents of the restoration of the nuclear deal signed by Iran in 2015 and from which the United States unilaterally withdrew in 2018.
The Israeli government has repeatedly warned that Tehran is trying to acquire nuclear weapons, which Iranian authorities deny.
Iran has repeatedly emphasized that Israel is the only country in the Middle East that possesses nuclear weapons and is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Israel pursues a policy of ambiguity and does not officially confirm its possession of nuclear weapons, even though it is believed to have them, following the disclosure of its program by a former nuclear weapons technician in the 1980s.
Russia possesses the second largest nuclear arsenal after the United States and has also indicated its intention to use it against Ukraine, although noting that it would only do so if its existence were questioned.
