Emmanuel Macron, a guest on France 2’s “L’Evenement” program on Wednesday night, spoke at length about the war in Ukraine. The Head of State returned above all to the risk of escalation of the conflict, and in particular to Vladimir Putin’s declarations on nuclear weapons.
For Emmanuel Macron, France’s nuclear doctrine “is based on the fundamental interests of the nation, they are very clearly defined.” When asked about a possible tactical attack from Russia, Emmanuel Macron considered that this would not require a nuclear response.
“It is not our doctrine,” he repeated.
Prevent the conflict from “spreading”
“It would be a historical responsibility on the part of Russia” to use nuclear weapons -he added-, as a power endowed (with nuclear weapons, editor’s note), Russia has that responsibility and Vladimir Putin knows it.
To avoid “any escalation of the conflict”, Emmanuel Macron judges that France must continue “helping Ukraine to resist and build peace”, and prevent the conflict “from spreading geographically or vertically, that is, through the use of chemical weapons or nuclear”.
“There is a simple rule: we have a doctrine, it is clear: deterrence (nuclear, editor’s note) works, but the less we talk about it, the less we agitate the threat, the more credible we are,” he concluded. believing that “too many people” are talking about it.
