During an intervention on France 2, the President of the Republic announced the shipment to Ukraine of anti-aircraft defense systems. “We are going to deliver radars, systems and missiles (anti-aircraft, editor’s note) to protect (Ukrainians) from attacks, in particular to protect them from drone attacks,” he said.
This announcement follows President Zelensky’s request for help to protect him from the bombing that has intensified in recent days. On October 10 alone, more than 84 missiles fell on Ukraine who only managed to eliminate 43 of them. Since last summer, Kyiv has been asking its allies to provide it with an anti-aircraft shield to deal with this situation. On Tuesday, Zelensky asked the G7 to help him create an “air shield” over Ukraine.
Help from the United States and Germany
The White House announced on Monday the shipment of “advanced” anti-aircraft defense systems. They will be NASAMS batteries (Norwegian Advanced Surface to Air Missile System), a medium and long-range system capable of intercepting missiles at a distance of 180 km. Designed by the Norwegian group Kongsberg, it is produced by the American company Raytheon.
Germany on Tuesday delivered an Iris-T defense system (Infrared Imaging System) with a range of 40 kilometers at 20 kilometers altitude. It is produced by the German Diehl BGT Defense. The Iris-T is designed to intercept missiles, but also planes, helicopters and drones.
On the shipment of other Caesar weapons, Emmanuel Macron recalled that France has already provided 18 with 6 more taken from an order from Denmark. He explained that France also needed to keep its weapons to defend itself and carry out external operations.
