More than 50,000 civilians moved to southern Gaza in the last 24 hours

More than 50,000 Palestinians moved from the north to the south of the Gaza Strip in the last 24 hours through the only crossing authorized by the Israelis, raising the number of displaced people to 72,000, according to the United Nations.

The daily report from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) indicates that for the fifth consecutive day, the Israeli Army continues to order the inhabitants of northern Gaza to head towards the south of the enclave.

There are still “hundreds of thousands of people” who remain in the area that Israel wants to move to the south of the territory through the Saladin highway, the main artery of the region.

According to the UN, withdrawals are increasingly numerous and have increased in recent days.

“Combats and bombings continue on the road, endangering the displaced and there are testimonies indicating the existence of bodies next to the road,” the newspaper report states.

The UN emphasizes that the passage between the north and the south that crosses the Gaza River remains open, but only between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. (8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. in Lisbon).

Most of the displaced make the trip on foot, walking “four or five kilometers” and those who travel by car are forced to abandon their vehicles at the Al Kuwaiti roundabout, at the southern end of Gaza City.

The UN document reiterates that the situation of hospitals in the northern part of Gaza, including Al Quds, forced them to cancel all surgeries due to lack of fuel.

The other hospital in the area (Al Auda) is the only one that offers maternity services in the north of the enclave, but it only has fuel reserves for the next 30 hours.
