The UN General Assembly on Wednesday condemned with an “overwhelming” majority the Russian “illegal annexations” of Ukrainian territories, after Moscow vetoed a similar text in the Security Council at the end of September.
The General Assembly of 193 Member States, meeting in emergency since Monday, adopted this resolution with 143 votes in favor, five countries against and 35 that abstained, including China, India, Pakistan and South Africa, despite the diplomatic efforts of the United States. state
The five states that voted against are, unsurprisingly, Russia, Belarus, Syria, North Korea, and Nicaragua.
With this text, co-produced by the European Union and presented by Ukraine, the Westerners claimed to have shown that President Vladimir Putin’s Russia was “isolated” on the international scene, seven months after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.
“Now we must stop the war”
“By invading its neighbor, Russia has decided to pave the way for other annexation wars. What happens today in Europe can happen tomorrow in other places: in Asia, in Africa, in Latin America”, explained Frenchman Nicolas de Rivière.
For the British Barbara Woodward, “Russia has failed on the battlefield and in the UN. (…) Russia has isolated itself. (…) Now we must stop the war.”
The resolution “condemns the illegal annexation attempts” of the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson after “alleged illegal referendums” and stresses that these actions “have no validity” under international law.
A few hours after the vote, Joe Biden considered that the decision of the UN General Assembly “sends a clear message” to Russia.
