March against anti-Semitism: the demonstration in Paris begins calmly despite political tensions

In France, this Sunday more than seventy demonstrations against anti-Semitism will be held throughout the country. In Paris, the procession began at 3:00 p.m.

In France, this Sunday more than seventy demonstrations against anti-Semitism will be held throughout the country. In Paris, the procession began at 3:00 p.m.

This Sunday afternoon, 74 demonstrations were organized throughout French territory. Anti-Semitic acts have multiplied in France since the beginning of October, leading to the arrest of more than 500 people.

Before the start of the Parisian procession, the Minister of the Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu, called on the French to participate, considering this demonstration to be a historic fight against anti-Semitism.

“I have never participated in any demonstration, for different reasons. But I believe that today we are facing a political struggle. Anti-Semitism is not an opinion, it is a crime. We can limit ourselves to considering that these are judicial cases. and it would be enough to punish the people. It is clear that it must be done. But today it is about more than that: it is a political struggle,” defended the Minister of the Armed Forces.

Faced with harsh criticism related to her presence in this Sunday’s procession, Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Union party, says she is in the right place: “We are exactly where we need to be. Here, some of the political classes “They do not have the greatness that consists in rising above the event.”

The rebellious France refused to participate in the demonstration, justifying not wanting to demonstrate alongside the deputies of the National Union.

Emmanuel Macron is not present at the Sunday afternoon demonstration. Éric Ciotti, president of the Republican Party, describes this absence as a “serious error” and adds that it is “a serious error at this moment of national unity.” All his predecessors, from François Mitterrand to François Hollande, passing through Nicolas Sarkozy, were present in these moments that express national unity, which must represent national unity: the Republic.”

Many metro lines are closed this afternoon in the French capital. More than 3,000 police officers are deployed on the streets of the capital, in an important security measure announced by the Minister of the Interior, Gerald Darmanin.

Since the Hamas attacks in Israel on October 7, 1,247 overtly anti-Semitic acts have been recorded and more than 539 people have been interrogated. This is an exponential increase compared to last year, when 436 anti-Semitic acts were recorded in France.
