The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, expressed “deep concern” this Tuesday by the “appalling” situation in several hospitals in Gaza, and reinforced calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire “in the name of humanity. “
“The Secretary General is deeply concerned by the horrific situation and the dramatic loss of life in several hospitals in Gaza,” said Guterres spokesman Stéphane Dujarric.
“In the name of humanity, the Secretary General calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire,” Guterres’ spokesman stressed.
Still on the situation in Gaza’s hospitals, the organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) today called for an investigation into Israeli attacks on health facilities, medical staff and transportation, saying they could constitute war crimes.
The attacks “further destroy Gaza’s health system,” the New York-based human rights group said in a report cited by Spanish agency EFE.
HRW called on the Israeli government to stop attacks on hospitals and defended an investigation by the International Criminal Court and the Independent International Commission of Inquiry into the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
Israel claims that the Islamist group Hamas has a network of tunnels and military infrastructure under and around hospitals in the Gaza Strip.
Tel Aviv accused Hamas on Monday of using the Rantisi Children’s Hospital to hide the militiamen who carried out the October 7 attack in Israel and to hold hostages captured at the time.
Hamas’ unprecedented attack left 1,200 dead and sparked a war that has killed more than 11,000 people in the Gaza Strip, according to figures from the Islamist group, which has controlled the area since 2007.
