Twenty-eight percent of Europeans argue that the war between Russia and Ukraine should end as soon as possible, even if it means losing territory for Kiev, according to the latest opinion survey from the European Council on External Relations (ECFR), which polled people from 11 European countries, including Portugal. Outside of this continent, the people most supportive of this solution are Chinese (48%), South Africans, Saudis and Russians (46%).
In the opposite direction, there are North Americans (42%), South Koreans (41%) and 33% of Europeans, who believe that Ukraine should get all its territory back, even if this prolongs the war or if more Ukrainians die or be murdered. displaced.
High percentages say the US is at war with Russia (63% of Russians, 57% of Chinese, but also 36% of Europeans).
The fate of the war is closely linked to the future of the EU, according to respondents to this survey conducted in collaboration with the Europe in a Changing World project at the University of Oxford. Four in ten believe the EU will fall apart in the next 20 years, especially those polled outside Europe, with China leading the way (67%), followed by Saudi Arabia (62%) and Russia (54 %). in three Europeans are also pessimistic about the European project.
Of those polled who predict the collapse of the EU, 73.3% say Russia will win the war.
In conclusion, the ECFR defends, on the one hand, a policy of “strategic interdependence” for the EU and, on the other hand, to “invest more in the military and security dimensions of hard powerbuilding on what they have already done to support Ukraine.”
