This Wednesday, the United States Capitol Police arrested several participants in a pro-Palestinian protest, next to the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee.
The incidents led to the closure, for security reasons, of the House of Representatives office buildings.
Several congressmen present at the headquarters and police officers highlighted on social media that the protest was violent, with videos published showing clashes between both parties and protesters being forcibly removed by agents.
Capitol Police stated that officers were working to evict about 150 demonstrators who were protesting “illegally and violently” in the area and that they had made some arrests, according to a message posted on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
The protest came on the same day that 24 US congressmen, all from the Democratic Party, called for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and urged the White House to take that position.
“We express our deep concern about the escalation of the war in Gaza, especially the grave violations against children, and our fear that, without an immediate cessation of hostilities and the establishment of a robust bilateral ceasefire, this war will lead to more loss of civilian life,” they stated in a letter addressed to US President Joe Biden.
Led by New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the lawmakers also warned “of the risk of dragging the United States into a dangerous and reckless conflict with armed groups throughout the Middle East.”
For their part, Republicans such as Andy Barr and Anna Paulina Luna criticized the “violent and anti-Semitic” protest that prevented them from leaving their offices.
On October 7, Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel with the launch of thousands of rockets and the incursion of armed militiamen.
In response, Israel declared war on Hamas, which has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007 and is classified as terrorist by the EU and the United States, bombed several of the group’s infrastructure in Gaza and imposed a total siege on the territory, cutting off water. . supplies, fuel and electricity.
Israeli bombings from air, land and sea caused more than 11,000 deaths, mostly civilians, in the Gaza Strip, according to Hamas data.
