Residential building in Russian city hit by Ukrainian attack

A residential building was hit by a Ukrainian attack in the Russian city of Belgorod, in a region bordering Ukraine, local Russian authorities accused on Thursday.

“The Ukrainian armed forces bombed Belgorod. Anti-aircraft defense activated. There is destruction in a residential building,” Vyacheslav Gladkov, governor of this region, where shootings have multiplied in recent weeks, said on the Telegram social network.

“We are trying to clarify if there is [potenciais] victims,” added Gladkov, who posted photos of debris strewn across a street and a damaged car.

According to the governor of the Belgorod region, a missile also fell on the sports complex of a high school in the city, but did not explode.

Images posted on social media showed the top floor of a destroyed residential building, while another video shows the missile hitting a cloud of black smoke.

Gladkov also accused kyiv of having fired on the Russian town of Krasnoye, also located on the border with Ukraine.

“There is destruction on the school grounds,” he added, also posting a photo of a crater surrounded by shrapnel from a mortar shell.

Although the Belgorod region has been regularly attacked by Ukraine, especially since the spring, the regional capital has so far rarely been attacked since the beginning of the conflict.

On Tuesday, Gladkov said that some 2,000 residents were left without electricity after a Ukrainian attack on a power plant in the town of Chebekino, also in the Belgorod region. The day before, a 74-year-old woman was killed and others wounded in another attack on the town.

Russia last week reported a “significant increase” in Ukrainian attacks on Russian regions along the Ukrainian border. According to Moscow, the attacks hit residential and administrative buildings, electricity production complexes and border crossings.
