Russia warned on Thursday that Ukraine’s eventual entry into NATO would be a suicidal step leading to a third world war, of which the authorities in kyiv and the Atlantic Alliance are aware.
“kyiv is well aware that such a step would mean a guaranteed escalation into a third world war,” Russian Federation Security Council Deputy Secretary Alexander Venediktov told the official TASS news agency.
“The whole suicidal nature of this stage [adesão da Ucrânia] understood by NATO members themselves,” he added.
Hours after Russia declared the annexation of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia on September 30, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a request for accelerated NATO membership.
Ukraine’s eventual membership, like any other country, must be approved by each of the 30 members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Venediktov said kyiv’s request “was immediately supported by Eastern Europeans, including the Balkans,” but “serious powers” reacted lukewarmly.
The Russian leader described Ukraine’s bid as a “propaganda action” by Ukrainian leaders to “draw attention to themselves again.”
Venediktov said that while Ukrainian leaders are “out of touch with reality,” it would not be surprising if there were those who hoped Ukraine would join NATO.
“In any case, Russia’s position remains unchanged: Ukraine’s membership in NATO or other alliances formed under the auspices of the United States is unacceptable to us,” he said.
Before ordering the invasion of Ukraine, on February 24 of this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin demanded that NATO guarantee, in the form of a treaty, that Ukraine would never be a member of the organization, which was rejected by the allies. Westerners.
Venediktov even accused the West of being “a direct party” to the Ukraine war, despite claims to the contrary.
“Ukraine’s admission to NATO will automatically give a new quality to this participation [dos aliados na guerra]the fifth article will enter into force”, he said in reference to the clause of the alliance treaty on collective defense in case of aggression against one of the member states.
Ukraine’s allies have been supplying the Ukrainian armed forces with military equipment, enabling them to launch a counteroffensive and recapture territory they had lost to Russian forces, including in annexed regions.
The Ukraine war plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
The number of civilian and military casualties is unknown, but various sources, including the UN, have admitted that it will be considerably high.
Presided over by Vladimir Putin, the Security Council of the Russian Federation is a coordinating body for national security policy and includes the main figures of the State.
