North Korean fighter jets fly near the border with South Korea

A dozen North Korean warplanes flew near the border with South Korea on Thursday, prompting Seoul to send planes in response, according to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency.

The incident came at a time of heightened military tensions between the two countries on the Korean peninsula, following several tests of weapons from Pyongyang. It is the second case of involving aircraft in the space of a week.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, quoted by Yonhap, said 10 fighter jets had been detected flying 25 kilometers north of the border between the two countries from 10:30 p.m. Thursday to 12:20 a.m. Thursday. Friday, local time. The plane crossed a “reconnaissance line” set up in Seoul that triggers an automatic operational response from the South Koreans.

North Korea launched another ballistic missile toward its eastern waters, South Korea said Thursday. This is the ninth missile launch by North Korea in the past 20 days.

The latest launches came hours after the United States and South Korea ended another naval exercise off the east coast of the Korean peninsula involving a US aircraft carrier.
