North Korea has fired an unspecified ballistic missile into the sea, Yonhap reported Friday, citing the military of the South.
The news came about two hours after Yonhap reported that nearly a dozen North Korean fighter jets had flown close to the southern border around midnight on Thursday, prompting Seoul to shake fighter jets in response.
The incident came amid mounting military tensions in the peninsula over a series of weapons tests by Pyongyang and was the second such event involving fighter jets in a week.
The Southern Joint Chiefs of Staff, quoted by Yonhap, said 10 fighter jets had been detected flying 25 kilometers north of the inter-Korean border between 10:30 PM on Thursday and 12:20 PM on Friday local time, crossing a “reconnaissance line.” ” ” established in Seoul that activates an automatic operational response from the South.
According to the JCS, Yonhap reported that Seoul’s coded military aircraft, including the F-35A fighter jets, have undergone an emergency operation.
The move comes shortly after the Pyongyang test fired a pair of long-range strategic cruise missiles on Wednesday, according to state media, tests overseen by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Pyongyang described its recent missile tests as tactical nuclear exercises that simulated the withdrawal of airports and military installations in South Korea.
