American nuclear aircraft carrier arrives in South Korea

A United States nuclear aircraft carrier arrived at a port in South Korea on Tuesday, the South Korean navy announced, a week after the two countries revised a strategic military deterrent deal to counter Pyongyang.

The USS Carl Vinson arrived at the port of the city of Busan, about 220 miles southeast of Seoul, accompanied by an attack fleet, the South Korean Navy explained.

According to a statement, the ship’s arrival is intended to “increase regular visibility of United States strategic assets, deliver on the promises of extended deterrence, and improve the combined defense posture.”

Last week, the U.S. and South Korean defense chiefs revised a strategic military deterrent deal to counter Pyongyang for the first time in a decade, at a time when the two allies are stepping up defense cooperation in response to growing nuclear threats from the North.

For example, the agreement included an increase in the frequency with which the Pentagon places assets on the Korean Peninsula and the creation of the so-called Nuclear Consultation Group, a mechanism to coordinate responses to possible attacks by North Korea, including the nuclear option. .

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin last week announced the arrival of the USS Carl Vinson, which last visited the peninsula in 2017 and is the third US aircraft carrier to visit South Korea this year, following the USS Nimitz in March and the USS Ronald Reagan, in October.

The aircraft carrier’s arrival “demonstrates the solid combined defense posture” and “firm determination to respond to North Korea’s advancing nuclear and missile threats,” the director of the Southern Fleet operations center said in the statement. Ji-hoon.

North Korea notified Japan’s coast guard on Monday of its intention to launch a satellite between Wednesday and December 1, Japan’s Kyodo agency said.

South Korea’s military told the North to “immediately” suspend preparations for the launch of the spy satellite, warning Pyongyang it would otherwise take “necessary measures.”
