The Kiev region was attacked by “kamikaze drones” in the early hours of Thursday, the local governor said, urging the population to protect themselves in shelters. “We have had attacks on one of the communities in the region. An attack by kamikaze drones. Rescue teams are already at work,” said Oleksiy Kuleba.
The regional governor, quoted by the AP, said the attack took place in an area close to the capital, with no information on casualties.
Critical infrastructure facilities were affected, Kyrylo Tymoshenko, deputy chief of staff to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said in a Telegram message.
This is the fourth day that residents of this Ukrainian region have woken up to the sound of airstrike warning sirens after Russia launched a massive attack on several cities across the country, including the capital Kiev, earlier this week.
The city of Mykolaiv, in the south of the country, was also the target of an attack on Thursday. A five-storey building was hit. “The two upper floors were completely destroyed, the rest was under rubble,” Mayor Oleksandr Sienkovych said on social media.
Vitali Kim, the regional governor of Mykolaiv, said an 11-year-old child was rescued from the rubble where he remained for six hours.
Authorities are conducting searches at the same location to locate seven people who are still missing.
The Ukrainian local official said the building was hit by an S-300 missile mostly used against air strikes, adding that “the Russians apparently use the weapon” indiscriminately against ground targets.
This morning’s attacks on the southern Ukrainian front are similar to those of recent days, especially after Ukrainian forces launched a counter-offensive in the Russian-occupied territory.
