The director of Gaza’s Al-Shifa Hospital Center, currently controlled by Israeli forces, has been arrested, the hospital’s head of service announced on Thursday.
“Doctor Mohammed Abou Salmiya has been arrested,” doctor Khaled Abou Samra told AFP.
Al-Shifa was once presented by Israel as the main command center for Hamas operations in the Gaza Strip. For days, his soldiers searched the establishment, the largest in the Palestinian enclave.
“Two nurses were arrested, as well as another doctor,” said an official from the health ministry of Hamas, the Islamist group that rules the Gaza Strip.
Several doctors told AFP they were personally led by Israeli soldiers during the searches, which usually ended with the detonation of explosives on the ground floor and basement of the hospital.
The Israeli army has already announced that it has found a 55-meter-long tunnel “used for terrorism” in Al-Shifa. It also released video surveillance footage that an Israeli spokesman said proves hostages were being held there.
Hamas responded that the hostages had been taken to hospital for medical treatment.
