A Moscow court extended until January 30 the detention of Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal journalist, accused of espionage, Russian news agencies reported.
The hearing took place this Tuesday behind closed doors to maintain the confidentiality of the process.
Gershkovich was detained in March during a reporting trip to the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, about 2,000 kilometers east of Moscow, Russia’s capital.
Russia’s Federal Security Service stated that the journalist, “on instructions from the American side, collected information constituting state secrets about the activities of one of the companies of the Russian military-industrial complex.”
Gershkovich and the Wall Street Journal deny the allegations, and the US government has said he was wrongfully detained.
Russian authorities have not publicly presented any evidence to support the espionage accusations.
