Hungarian PR criticizes sanctions against Russia, calls for peace talks

Hungary’s prime minister, ultra-nationalist Viktor Orbán, today criticized European Union (EU) sanctions against Russia, assuring that the resolution of the conflict would involve ending fighting and peace negotiations.

“Sanctions rarely work and should not affect those who apply them more than those who are sanctioned,” Orbán said in a speech on Kossuth’s public radio today.

The Hungarian prime minister, considered Moscow’s biggest ally in the EU, reiterated that Brussels is “the dwarf who wants to punish the giant”, which has pushed up energy prices now paid by European citizens.

According to Orbán, the EU will soon have a chance to correct its mistakes, as sanctions have to be reviewed every six months.

“[Na UE] Some say the war must be won, while others [como a Hungria] say an end to the fighting and peace negotiations is necessary,” the Hungarian prime minister said.

Orbán stated that personalities such as Pope Francis, former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger or German philosopher Jünger Habermas also support this position.

Although it has criticized the sanctions, the Hungarian government has so far supported all punitive measures against Moscow, although it has refused to support Kiev with weapons.

In this regard, Orbán recalled the anti-Soviet-Hungarian revolution of 1956, which was brutally crushed by the Russian Red Army.

“We know how brutality is related to the Red Army. In 1956” [na verdade a execução foi em 1958] killed our (Volodymiyr) Zelesnky, Imre Nagy [que era o líder húngaro da revolução]the Prime Minister emphasized.

Hungary imports 85 percent of its gas and 65 percent of its oil from Russia.
