Netanyahu trial for alleged corruption resumes next week

On Monday, the Israeli justice system will resume the trial for alleged corruption of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suspended, like all cases considered non-urgent, due to the war unleashed on October 7 by the attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas in Israel.

Following this attack, Justice Minister Yariv Levin decreed a near-total closure of the judicial system, but has now ordered most courts to resume normal activity starting Friday.

In Netanyahu’s case, the next hearing will be Monday in the Jerusalem District Court, The Times of Israel reported.

Netanyahu is accused in three cases of a series of crimes, including fraud and accepting bribes, although he always claimed that it was political persecution and, in fact, managed to return to power for a sixth term with the cases already open at the end. of 2022.

The Government promoted a reform of the judicial system that, according to the opposition, will affect the independence of the judiciary, implying greater political control of the courts.

This reform led thousands of people to take to the streets in protest, but these demonstrations were also suspended due to the October 7 attack on Israeli territory and the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip.
