From Sunday, the Portuguese navy will once again command Operation Atalanta, a European Union naval force aimed at protecting World Food Program ships and combating piracy, it was announced on Friday.
Operation Atalanta will be commanded by Captain Martins de Brito between December 3, 2023 and February 10, 2024, the Navy announced in a statement.
During this 45th rotation of the European Naval Forces, the new commander will be accompanied by a team of naval soldiers.
The group was recently in Rota, Spain, where they had the opportunity to prepare for the mission that begins this Sunday aboard the ship ESPS Victoria, the note said.
The main objectives of Operation Atalanta are “to protect World Food Program ships and all navigation considered vulnerable, as well as to prevent piracy attacks and theft at sea”.
Rogério Martins de Brito was born in Angola on January 5, 1969 and joined the Navy in 1986, after graduating from the Naval School in Naval Military Sciences, Marine class.
During his career he attended several operational courses, in the Portuguese Navy and Army, but also in Spain, the United States of America and Germany, where he obtained qualifications in special, amphibious and expeditionary operations.
In September this year, the naval officer ended his one-year deployment commanding the European Union training mission in Mozambique.
