Zelensky vows to reform military service in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced this Friday that he intends to reform military recruitment laws in order to create the conditions for a possible demobilization of some combatants in the war against Russia.

“Everyone in Ukraine understands that changes are necessary in this area,” said the Ukrainian leader in a publication on the Telegram channel, cited by the Spanish news agency EuropaPress.

Zelensky was referring to fighters who were deployed to the front lines at the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022 and have not yet been replaced.

Zelensky’s announcement is seen as a concession to certain military circles that, in recent times, have demanded greater troop rotation to allow a period of rest and recovery for fighters.

Martial law declared in response to the Russian offensive prevents the demobilization of soldiers, some of whom have been on the front line for 21 months.

According to official data, around 820,000 Ukrainians currently serve in the country’s Armed Forces.

If Ukraine allows troop rotation or the return of some soldiers home, the Armed Forces will have to recruit additional troops, a situation that Zelensky himself acknowledged is “the focus” of the military reform he promised.
