The United States is increasingly asserting its support for the Iranian protesters. Its president, Joe Biden, said he stood “with the citizens, the brave women of Iran” and said he was “stunned” by the ongoing protests in the country, during a trip to California on Friday.
The US president spoke of Mahsa Amini’s death, saying he was “stunned by what it has awakened in Iran. It has awakened something that I don’t think will go away for a long, long time.”
Women “should be able to wear whatever they want to wear, my God,” Joe Biden called.
“End the Violence”
While expected to give a speech in California about the cost of health care in the United States, Joe Biden was arrested by protesters holding “Free Iran” signs.
He spoke, therefore, of the protest that Iran has been experiencing since the death on September 16 of a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, three days after her arrest for violating the dress code.
“Iran must end the violence against its own citizens who are simply exercising their basic rights,” he said.
Washington shows increasingly visible support for protesters
In tune with Joe Biden, the US Executive showed this Friday in a more visible way its support for the demonstrations in Iran. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken received representatives from the Iranian diaspora, while Vice President Kamala Harris invited actress and activist Nazanin Boniadi.
“We are witnessing something remarkable throughout the country, led mainly by women and young people,” said the head of US diplomacy.
Kamala Harris said in a statement that “the courage of these women inspired (her) as it inspired the world” and pledged her guest Washington’s help in “ensuring these important voices are heard, including facilitating access to the internet.” in Iran.
Demonstrations are expected in Iran this Saturday at the call of activists in the protest movement unleashed by the death of Mahsa Amini.
