At least two people were killed and five were injured this Thursday after a shooting at a school in Bryansk, Russia, near the border with Ukraine.
According to information provided by Agence France-Press, the perpetrator of the attack was a 14-year-old student who committed suicide shortly after.
“A 14-year-old girl brought a closed-barreled shotgun to school, with which she shot her classmates. As a result, two died – one of them the shooter – and five were injured,” the authorities said, quoted by AFP.
The motives for the attack are still unknown. “All circumstances are being investigated,” the authorities add.
“Today a terrible tragedy occurred at school number 5 in Bryansk. One of the students entered the school with a weapon,” regional governor Alexandre Bogomaz wrote on Telegram.
According to the governor, the five injured are children and were hospitalized.
Deadly shootings, especially in schools, have become increasingly numerous in Russia in recent years.
The Russian head of state classified these situations as a phenomenon imported from the United States and a perverse effect of globalization. Putin ended up tightening gun legislation.
In September 2022, a shooting in Izhevsk, central Russia, left 18 dead, and in 2021, a 21-year-old attacker killed nine people at a school in Kazan, Tatarstan.
