Brazil tops the list of 10 countries with the highest murder rate

Brazil tops the list of the world’s 10 countries recording the most violent deaths, according to the Global Study on Homicide released by the United Nations in Vienna on Friday.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) estimates that 458,000 murders were recorded worldwide in 2021. The overall rate was 5.8 per 100,000 inhabitants and 81% of the victims were men and boys.

The report has 2021 as a reference year, but because not all states provided the necessary data, the year of origin of the homicide numbers is specified for each country.

Brazil tops the rankings with 47,722 murders (2020), followed by Nigeria with 44,200 (2019) and India with 41,330 (2021).

In fourth place is Mexico with 35,700 murders, followed by South Africa (24,865), the United States (22,941), Myanmar (15,299), Colombia (14,159), Russia (9,866) and Pakistan (9,207). All these countries have provided data for 2021.

Regarding Latin America and the Caribbean, 27% of the 458,000 murders recorded in the world in 2021 were committed in this region, which remained the most violent in the world for another year, despite the overall trend continuing to decline – between 2017 and 2021, the economy fell by almost 14% – with the exception of Ecuador, Nicaragua and Panama.

“Latin America and the Caribbean not only consistently have the highest homicide rate of all sub-regions, but also had the highest rate of organized crime-related homicides globally in 2021,” UNODC said.
