Milei promises a new era after receiving “the worst inheritance” in history in Argentina

Argentina’s new president, Javier Milei, promised this Sunday a “new era” of “peace and prosperity” with his government, which is receiving what he considers “the worst legacy” in the country’s history.

“Today begins a new era in Argentina, an era of peace and prosperity, an era of growth and development, an era of freedom and progress”Milei said in his inauguration speech on the steps of Congress to his supporters gathered in the square in front of the building.

“No government has received a worse legacy than the one we are receiving,” he added.

Milei has promised there will be “no half measures” as she faces decades of overspending and debt. “I swear by God and by country… that I will exercise the office of President of the Argentine nation with loyalty and patriotism,” he said as he took the oath of office.

The new Argentine president warned that it will be necessary to implement a strong fiscal adjustment, emphasizing that although “in the short term the situation will worsen,” the fruits of these efforts will be visible later. “There is no money, there is no alternative to adjustment, there is no alternative to shock,” he shouted before thousands of supporters heading to Congress, waving the country’s blue and white flag and chanting Milei’s rallying cry of “freedom! ” repeated.

“We will be able to work and strive to achieve our dreams without the weight of suffocating taxes, inflation and the pressure of a monetary system that is crippling our nation.”

The event brought together a diverse group of world leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Hungarian nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

The new president also stated that his first set of measures will be presented to Congress within days.

“Like many of his predecessors, Milei arrives with all the warning lights on,” said Benjamin Gedan, director of the Argentina Project at the Wilson Center in Washington.
