European Parliament defends path to peace with ‘strong Palestinian state’

The European Parliament (EP) delegation that visited the occupied Palestinian territories and Israel this weekend was of the opinion this Monday that “nothing positive can happen” without the creation of a “strong Palestinian state”.

In a statement, the EP simultaneously condemned the “despicable crimes” committed by the Islamist movement Hamas and Israel’s actions against “innocent Palestinians who are suffering the consequences” in the Gaza Strip, which has been bombed continuously over the past two months, and in the West Bank . , where Israeli settlers increased violence to drive people from their homes and expand settlements.

“Nothing positive can happen unless there is a renewed political effort to reform the Palestinian Authority and build a strong Palestinian state,” they added in the note released after the trip to Israel and the West Bank.

The EP calls for cooperation between the Israeli and Palestinian authorities and the European Union missions on the ground, the “day after” the end of the current conflict, to help with reconstruction and to build relations on basis of peaceful dialogue.

MEPs also want “more efforts to increase aid access to Gaza,” completely surrounded by Israeli forces.

With more than 16,000 dead in just eight weeks, the United Nations Secretary General, Portuguese António Guterres, called for an immediate ceasefire and admitted that the humanitarian situation in Gaza is on the verge of collapse , whereby UN humanitarian aid is practically no longer necessary. impossible (UN facilities being bombed).
