Lebanon and Jordan join the international general strike to demand a ceasefire in Gaza

Public institutions and the private sector in Lebanon and Jordan closed their doors this Monday as part of a general strike, called internationally, to demand a ceasefire in Gaza.

The Lebanese Government headquarters remained closed on this day of national strike, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs suspended its work within the country and also in missions abroad to “ask the entire world to adopt a position of conscience”, according to a government statement.

Several Lebanese unions and companies did not open their services today in solidarity with the population of the Gaza Strip, who abandoned the streets of several neighborhoods in Beirut, and the cities of Tyre, Tripoli and Akkar, which were practically deserted.

In parallel with the strike, dozens of people gathered in Beirut to demand an immediate ceasefire, in an event in which protesters waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans such as “Stop genocide!”, while condemning Israel’s attacks. against southern Lebanon.

The Secretary General of the Lebanese Council of Ministers, Mahmud Makkiya, ordered this Monday the closure of public administrations in solidarity not only with Gaza, but also with the Lebanese border towns, which are under fire between the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah and Israel.

Jordan’s state institutions continued to function today, while the private sector announced its total closure, thus responding to the call for a general strike launched by the coalition of Palestinian factions of the National and Islamic Forces, which had international repercussions.

Likewise, several stores and shopping centers in Amman hung posters on their facades announcing their support for the attacks and condemning “Israeli aggression against Gaza,” according to Jordanian state television Al Mamlaka.

“The majority of commercial establishments have remained closed since the morning, except for some vital sectors such as bakeries, pharmacies and other establishments whose operation has been necessary,” according to the television network.

The protest movement calls for not making purchases, not using the bank account, staying at home, deactivating social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram and using the social network X (formerly Twitter) with the hashtag #strikeforgaza.
