The leader of the Russian opposition, Alexei Navalny, who has been serving a sentence in prison number 6 in the Vladimir region since June 2022, was transferred to another prison whose location is still unknown, according to collaborators.
“His lawyer has just been informed that the prisoner Navalny is no longer in prison,” Kira Yarmish, one of the opposition leader’s allies, wrote on the social network X (formerly Twitter) on Monday.
According to Yarmish, prison officials did not agree to reveal the new whereabouts of Navalny, who is serving a prison sentence of almost 30 years.
According to Kira Yarmish, Navalny’s team had not heard from him for six days.
A spokesperson said today that the White House is “extremely concerned” about the latest information about Navalny.
“He should be released immediately. He should never have been arrested,” said National Security Council spokesman John Kirby, indicating that US authorities are seeking more information.
On December 7, Navalny appealed, from prison, to vote against Russian President Vladimir Putin in the March 2024 elections.
“On that day, we call on everyone to go to the polls and vote against Vladimir Putin. This can be done by putting a cross in the box of any other candidate,” he wrote on his ‘Telegram’ channel.
Navalny also announced the launch of a website (neputin.org), blocked the day after its launch, that called on Russians to support any presidential candidate except the current Kremlin head.
Putin, who is authorized by the 2020 constitutional reform to serve two more presidential terms of six years each, announced his candidacy for re-election on December 8 during a decoration ceremony for Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine.
Navalny, 47, who is still serving a nine-year sentence for alleged fraud, was sentenced last August to an additional 19 years in prison for creating an organization considered extremist, the Anti-Corruption Fund, which exposed the illicit enrichment of senior officials. . including Putin, whom he accused of owning a sumptuous palace on the shores of the Black Sea.
