Biden announces 185 million euros in military aid to Ukraine

The president of the United States, Joe Biden, announced this Tuesday, during a meeting at the White House with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, that he approved more than 185 million euros in military aid to Ukraine.

“I just signed a support of 200 million dollars [cerca de 185 milhões de euros] from the Department of Defense to Ukraine,” Biden told reporters at the start of the Oval Office meeting with the Ukrainian president.

Regarding the conflict with Russia, Biden told Zelensky that he does not want Ukrainians to give up and warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to attack Ukrainian power plants again, to worsen the situation during the winter.

Zelensky met with Biden in Washington for the third time since the start of the war and at a delicate moment, because the Republican opposition prevents the US Congress from approving new financing for Ukraine.

The $200 million announced today is part of a package that is about to run out and Biden has asked Congress, so far without success, to approve a new $106 million fund that includes $61 million for Ukraine and $15 millions of dollars for Israel.

Biden thus sent a message to Republicans in Congress to approve the new budget for Ukraine before going on vacation and added that, if they do not, they will give Putin “the best Christmas gift.”
