A volcano in southwestern Iceland erupted this Monday, after weeks of intense seismic activity, the country’s Meteorological Office reported, quoted by Reuters.
Authorities have evacuated the fishing village of Grindavik and closed the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa on the Reykjanes Peninsula.
“Warning: eruption started north of Grindavik, near Hagafell”writes the weather service on its website.
Images captured by media outlet RUV show lava being expelled from cracks in the ground.
A Coast Guard helicopter will be in the air to determine the exact location and size of the eruption.
The nearby Reykjavik International Airport remains operational.
The Reykjanes Peninsula has seen several eruptions in depopulated areas in recent years, but this eruption could pose a risk to the city of Grindavik, authorities warn.
Reykjanes is a volcanic and seismic hotspot southwest of the capital Reykjavik. In March 2021, the wave erupted from a fissure between 500 and 750 meters long at the bottom of the Fagradalsfjall volcanic system.
