Actor Jonathan Majors was found guilty on Monday of assault and harassment of his ex-girlfriend, after a two-week trial that put the American cast’s career as a lead in films in the Marvel universe on hold.
A jury in Manhattan found the 34-year-old actor guilty of assault and harassment. Majors was also acquitted of aggravated assault and harassment, the Associated Press (AP) reported.
The verdict reading was scheduled for February 6.
The situation that resulted in this lawsuit between the “Creed III” actor and his girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, took place one evening in March and started in the backseat of a chauffeured car and spread to the streets of Manhattan.
Jabbari, a 30-year-old British dancer, accused Majors of a vehicle attack that left her in excruciating pain and accused the actor of hitting her on the head with an open hand, twisting her arm behind her back and punching her in the waist pinch. finger until it breaks.
Majors’ lawyers accused Jabbari of being the aggressor, claiming the British woman became jealous after reading a message on the actor’s cell phone sent by another woman.
And they alleged that Jabbari spread a fabricated story to influence the career of the actor, who was just trying to get his phone back and get to safety.
The verdict was a major blow to Majors, who was on the brink of Hollywood stardom until his arrest in March put his career on hold as he was set to lead the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as the supervillain “Kang the Conqueror”.
The actor, who attended Yale drama school, lost other roles and endorsement deals and saw his critically acclaimed drama – “Magazine Dreams” – pulled from its planned release earlier this month.
Throughout the trial, Majors was accused of a “cruel and manipulative pattern” of abuse, with prosecutors sharing messages showing the actor begging Jabbari not to seek hospital treatment for a head injury.
One of the messages warned: “This could lead to an investigation, even if you lie and they suspect something.”
Majors’ lawyers argued that Jabbari premeditatedly shot her boyfriend as part of his plot to destroy the actor’s career.
In his closing arguments, prosecutor Kelli Galaway emphasized that Majors followed a manual used by abusers to spin the narrative, classifying their victims as aggressors.
