The Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (PLDR) on Tuesday nominated its leader, Leonid Slutsky, as a candidate for the May 2024 presidential election, in which Russian President Vladimir Putin will run for a third consecutive term.
The PLDR held an internal congress this Tuesday at which party delegates expressed their full support for Slutski, who had so far not expressed presidential aspirations, although he acknowledged that some members of the party power had suggested it.
Slutsky assumed leadership of the PLDR in May 2022, following an internal vote that designated him as Vladimir Zhirinovsky’s successor following his death just a few weeks earlier.
Since then, Slutsky has led the party’s faction in the Duma, Russia’s lower house.
Russian authorities have confirmed that the elections will take place between May 15 and 17, 2024, making it the first three-day presidential election in Russian history.
Putin has already confirmed that he will run as an independent candidate.
The Kremlin leader rose to the Russian presidency after winning the 2000 elections.
Since then, he has amassed large absolute majorities that helped him prevail in a total of four votes, divided into two phases because the Constitution prevented him from running for office in 2008.
