The Pope expresses “deep sadness” over the attack in Prague that killed 13 people

This Friday, Pope Francis expressed his “deep sadness” over the shooting at the University of Prague, which left 13 dead, in a telegram of condolence in which he also conveyed his “spiritual closeness” to the victims.

“Deeply saddened to learn of the loss of life and injuries caused by the shooting at Charles University in Prague, His Holiness Pope Francis expresses his spiritual closeness to all those affected by this tragedy,” the telegram reads. sent on behalf of the Pope by his Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

In the message, the Pope also assured Czechia that he will direct his “prayers in these difficult times” to the country.

An attack perpetrated on Thursday at a Prague university, where a Czech student began shooting indiscriminately at his classmates, left 13 dead, in addition to the gunman, who committed suicide.

The attack took place in a building located near the Faculty of Arts, in the historic center of the Czech capital, where important tourist sites are located, such as the 14th century Charles Bridge, whose motives are still unknown.

According to Police Chief Martin Vondrasek, police began searching for the young man even before the shooting, after his father was found dead in the village of Hostoun, west of Prague.

In addition to the dead, the shooting caused 25 injuries, nine of whom are in serious condition, but are now stabilized, according to hospital sources.

The Government has decreed that Saturday will be a “day of national mourning”, and at 12:00 the sirens will sound and a minute of silence will be observed.
