European Union foreign ministers on Monday adopted sanctions against Iranian officials, including deputy officials, involved in the crackdown on protests sparked by Mahsa Amini’s death on September 16.
The sanctions list, published in the Official Journal of the European Union and signed by the EU Foreign Minister, Josep Borrell, includes 11 Iranian officials, including the Information Minister, Issa Zarepour, and the Deputy Chief of Police , Mohammad Rostami, as well as four entities. They will be subject to a visa ban and asset freeze by the EU.
Unanimous decision today to take action against those responsible in Iran for the death of Mahsa Amini and the violent repression of peaceful protests. The EU will always act against serious human rights violations,” Josep Borrell wrote on Twitter.
The announcement comes five days after the announcement of a preliminary agreement by diplomats from the different countries of the Union, which had to be formalized by the ministers.
With these sanctions, the European Union follows in the footsteps of the United States, which had also announced at the end of September economic sanctions against the morality police for the repression of demonstrations.
