The Argentine president once again defends the decree of necessity and urgency

Argentine President Javier Milei reiterated this Monday his defense of the Decree of Necessity and Urgency (DNU), which contains more than 300 measures to deregulate the economy and which he will send to Parliament.

“It seems that some, out of sadism and others out of corruption, want to keep Argentinians in chains who want to escape poverty,” Milei wrote on the social network X, formerly Twitter.

Milei’s DNU plans to reform the state through budgetary adjustments and cuts in public expenditure, until reaching 5% of the country’s gross domestic product, something that will be accompanied by a package of laws, to restore taxation, administrative functions and commercial agreements, to negotiate in Congress that starts next Tuesday.

Milei’s quote is based on a writing that the late Argentine President Arturo Frondizi (between 1958 and 1962) published when he implemented reforms through decrees to nationalize, monopolize and provide Argentina with oil at a time when the country used more fuel. than the one who produced it.

The text quoted by the current president reads: ‘The plan of drastic reforms and rapid mobilization of resources that we are implementing requires a break with administrative routine. If we had not avoided this routine, we would still be talking about oil contracts and oil transfers. capital that was the battering ram that paved the way for the profound transformation of our economic structure.”

Frondizi’s government was characterized by the development of heavy industry through multinational companies establishing themselves in the country and with less state intervention, until he was deposed by a military coup.

Argentina’s opposition continues to take positions despite the shock of the economic measures proposed by the Milei government.

The Peronists – weakened after losing the elections – closed ranks behind the governor of Buenos Aires province, Axel Kicillof, who was the first to criticize the DNU.

In a meeting with leaders and representatives of the Unión por la Patria (Peronists) to analyze the current situation of the country, Kicillof assured that they will work “together” to coordinate joint actions and respond “to the needs of the population of Buenos Aires”.

“We have the commitment and responsibility to represent an entire province in the face of this adjustment plan, in the face of fiscal and monetary tightening and a very strong devaluation that is unbalancing the incomes of popular sectors,” he said in a statement declaration.

Argentina’s main unions spoke out against the reforms, announcing a mobilization for next Wednesday at the Palace of Justice to demand the decree’s withdrawal, as well as a joint protest with social organizations the following Thursday.

In turn, the Radical Civic Union (UCR, center) – member of the Juntos pela Change bloc (center-right) – distanced itself from Milei by asking the executive branch to send a “bill” to be discussed in Congress.

“The executive has time to correct its mistake by sending a draft law that can be debated in the National Congress, restoring the path to normality and building public confidence, consensus and parliamentary dialogue,” he said. the UCR in a statement.
