Four missing and around 20,000 affected by flooding in Thailand

At least four people remain missing as of Tuesday and about 20,000 people have been affected by flooding in southern Thailand after a heavy storm, local authorities said.

Emergency teams continue to search for four people who traveled on an evacuation boat that capsized in Narathiwat province, where schools and hospitals, among other government buildings, were partially submerged by flooding, Thai public broadcaster Thai PBS reported.

Some residents reported that the water rose more than two meters high and that they were forced to flee to higher floors or roofs.

Eleven schools were forced to suspend classes, while at least three hospitals were affected, although they managed to remain operational, Thailand’s health ministry said.

The floods also forced the closure of some major roads in the region and the suspension of train services.

Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin expressed concern about the situation and said he planned to visit the affected area during the day to monitor emergency work.

The flooding occurred after a heavy storm in the region a few days ago, which also caused flooding in neighboring Malaysia.
