Israeli attack on West Bank refugee camp kills two, including a teenager

Palestinian authorities said at least two Palestinians, including a 17-year-old teenager, died on Tuesday after being shot by Israeli soldiers during an operation in the al-Fauar refugee camp in the West Bank.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health, supervised by the Palestinian Authority, indicated on the Telegram platform that the dead were Ahmed Muhamad Yusef Yagui, 17, and Ibrahim Mayid Abdelmayid al Titi, 31.

Local sources cited by Palestinian news agency WAFA said the Israeli army launched an attack on the refugee camp and fired on a group of Palestinians, also wounding two, but did not provide further details.

The operation occurred in parallel with a series of other Israeli attacks, one of which hit the headquarters of the Palestinian Red Crescent, in the city of Khan Yunis, in the southern Gaza Strip, according to the humanitarian organization.

According to the same source, the attack caused several injuries among the internally displaced people taking refuge there.

“Artillery shells hit the upper floors” of the Red Crescent headquarters building, leaving “several injured among the displaced,” the humanitarian organization highlighted on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

“There were thousands of displaced people sheltering in the building,” he added.

The large cities of Rafah, near the border with Egypt, where thousands of displaced people are crowded, and Khan Younes, in the south of Gaza, where many of the Palestinians who lived in the northern part of the territory have fled, are currently the focus of Israeli attacks.

The army announced today that it had attacked more than a hundred Hamas targets on Monday, including tunnel entrances and military sites used to attack soldiers, specifically in Jabaliya, in the north, and in Khan Younes.

“We will not stop, (…) we will intensify the fighting in the coming days. It will be a long war,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday after visiting Gaza.

“Hamas must be destroyed, Gaza demilitarized and Palestinian society deradicalized,” he stressed in statements to the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal.

The war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7, when the Palestinian Islamist group launched an attack on Israeli soil that, according to Tel Aviv, caused around 1,200 deaths and took more than 200 hostages.

In retaliation, Israel heavily bombed Gaza and blocked access to essential goods such as water, medicine and fuel. According to authorities in Gaza, controlled by Hamas since 2007, the attacks left more than 20,600 dead, in addition to some 280 Palestinians killed in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
